The Salt mountain is located in Cardona, which is about 1 1/2h away from Barcelona. This Salt mine is one of the largest and most important ones in Europe.  It is located in the Cardona’s Salt Mountain Cultural Park, which shows the outstanding natural resources and mineral heritage. This unique place is a great opportunity to see Cardona’s saline outcrops.

Interior de la mina

Formed 2 million years ago the mountain is still growing as the rain erodes it. When industrial mining techniques got invented, a mine was built into the side of the mountain. In addition to the mineral export of potash salts, the people of Cardona began to make and sell salt sculptures. Furthermore they invented some hard salty pasties which are unique to the area. The Salt mine was working from 1900 to 1990 and got opened to the public in 1997.

The Visitors can see the about 280 meters deep Salt mine. Inside are galleries of 500m and spectacular stalactites and stalagmites as well as various salt seams of sodium, potassium and magnesium.
