The medieval tour will start in Barcelona, your guide will going to pick you up at your accommodation with a private car. The tour will be runned with a maximum of 8 persons, and during the travel inside the car the tour guiding will be explaining important and curious things that you will see in the scenery. The first stop will be Vic, one of the most important medieval city in Catalonia. Next station are the historical villages in the medieval Catalonia like the beautiful Santa Pau or the mysterious castellfollit de la roca with its ancient legends and curiosities. The tour ends where the most relevant romanic architecture masterpiece in La Garrotxa is, in the ancient town of Besalú.
The tour starts in Vic, this city was one of the most important counties of the current area of Catalonia, historically the city was destroyed during the Saracen invasion in the revolt against the Franks in the IX century. The Main Square, the Cathedral and Episcopal See are one of the renewed areas that nowadays are very important in the city. The guide will show you the most interessant heritage from the medieval era in Vic for example the roman temple, the Josep María sert’s painting in the Cathedral. Then you will have the possibility to taste the traditional catalan gastronomy and the guide will recommend you the best places to taste it.
When we will leave Vic, we will go in Besalú direction. In our way we will stop in two small but charming and historical villages. The first one will be Santa Pau, one village with cobbled and winding streets in a volcanic area. The next destination will be Castellfollit de la Roca, a village on the top of a 40 meters cliff of a very mysterious basaltic wall, the perfect place to take some beautiful pictures.
So finally we will arrive at Besalú. This town is dated from the Middle Ages, and you will can discover its cultural and natural heritage, its narrow streets will lead you to the center of the town in one of the best conserved medieval old town in Catalonia, wich was named Historical and Artistic National Monument in 1996, the guide will explain you the importance of the jewish community who lived during the Middle Ages in the town and its patrimonial inheritance.
Finally you will see the masterpiece of Besalú, the medieval bridge. This bridge is very famous in all the catalan territory because of its views from this medieval architecture bridge with an antique and charming essence.

  • Vic: Even though Vic has a big temple from the II Century proving that it was an important location during the Roman Period, after the Saracen invasion in 826 the city was destroyed. Thanks to its reconstruction in 878, a romanesque Cathedral was built, and the new city grew surrounding it. Vic is also known for its weekly markets in Plaça Major, where you can buy any kind of products. The most typical product is the local cold meat.
  • Santa Pau: Is the perfect example of the historic Catalunya because of its big medieval heritage. This town is located in the center of the Natural Park of the Volcanic Area of La Garrotxa, surrounded by natural beauty. It is a must to take a walk through its charming streets and its Main Square with its vaulted porch.
  • Castellfollit de la Roca: This wonderful medieval town made of stone and wood is hanging from the cliff edge and controls the region from the heights. Even it is a very small town, its spectacular localisation makes it totally photogenic, offering the best picture to the visitors.
  • Besalú: Walking through the streets of Besalú you can appreciate its huge architectonic riches, that proof that from the IX until the X Century was a very important county in Catalunya. Talking about medieval heritage, Besalú is one of the most spectacular and well preserved towns of Spain. In 1966, the medieval set was named Historical and Artistic National Monument because of its high architectonic value. From its monumental heritage, it has to be outlined the big inheritance left by the jewish community that lived in Besalú from the IX to the XV Century, which enriched the city. It is also mandatory to visit its spectacular romanesque bridge.
